Evening & Weekend MBA Program

Recommendations from the Part-Time and Executive MBA Career Services Task Force

(Adopted Sept. 2005)

1. Policies

Evening & Weekend MBAs
• All Evening & Weekend MBA (EWMBA) students may participate in career services and On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) without any sponsorship restrictions.
• EWMBA students may participate in OCR for summer internships if they are unemployed during the internship. Students must be in their second year to be eligible for internship opportunities through OCR.

Berkeley-Columbia MBAs
• All Berkeley-Columbia (BC) students will receive access to career advising and workshops.
• If a student would like to participate in OCR for full-time positions at Berkeley, the student must obtain a letter from his/her employer if he/she receives more than 50% financial sponsorship.
• Berkeley-Columbia students are not eligible to participate in OCR for summer internships.

All MBAs
• OCR for full-time positions is limited to currently enrolled students in their final year. May graduates are eligible for the fall - spring OCR season, while December graduates are eligible for fall OCR.
• Career services are available to students up to 3 months after graduation, excluding On-Campus Recruiting which is terminated upon graduation.
• All students must complete mandatory training and deliverables to use any OCR services.
• Students must be available for job interviews on campus between 8am and 5pm from October to April.
• Students must agree to abide by all standards for professionalism related to the OCR program.
• OCR job opportunities generally target MBAs with five years of work experience. Students with additional years of experience should seek out other processes for a job search. Career advisors can help build a strategy for success.
• Students are encouraged to check CareerNet for Company Job Postings, Haas@Cal for alumni job postings, and the Haas web site for student projects. Part-time opportunities are available during the school year.

2. Services
• Expand experienced hire job fairs and invite more companies to attend.
• Offer more industry panels and industry specific workshops.
• Offer more exposure to alumni through panels and networking events.
• Offer workshop series that build on each prior session.
• Increase presence of career staff on evenings and weekends.
• Recruitment Center representatives will brief interviewers about the various MBA programs on the day of the on-campus interviews.

3. Communications
• Create a web site for part-time students to be used as information for students. Once the initial web site is completed, future improvements should include transitional roadmaps and taped career sessions on streaming video.
• Hold public forums to open up communication channels with career services.
• Once additional career staff is available, proactively check in with students on career planning.

4. Staffing / Organizational Structure
• The task force recommends an additional 2 ½ staff members for the Career Services department, focused on part-time students. A new position, Director of Career Services for part-time students and alumni, has been created, and additional needs will be assessed once the new position is filled. Also, a half-time position has been posted to be filled immediately.
• Expand the role of the Account Managers to include outreach to market part-time students to companies.

5. Measurement
A number of measurement instruments were added this year. We will continue to conduct the following surveys:
• Berkeley-Columbia Exit Survey
• Berkeley-Columbia Entrance Survey (career questions to be added)
• EWMBA Exit Survey
• EWMBA End of year 1st year Student Survey (new in ’05)
• EWMBA Entrance Survey (new in ’05)
• Evaluation of one-on-one advising sessions for PTMBA students and alumni (new in ‘05)
• Evaluation of all workshops
• Needs Survey (all 3 years)
• Salary / Job Change Survey (may be combined with Exit Survey in the future)
