PhD Program

Management of Organizations

Students in the MORS PhD program are trained to become academics active in areas including judgement and decision making, status and power, diversity, innovation, negotiations and conflict resolution, nonverbal interaction, culture, social networks, or entrepreneurship. Students in the MORS PhD program are trained in one of two tracks: a micro track and a macro track

Training in the micro track focuses on psychological processes within organizations and students are trained to do research in areas including judgement and decision making, status and power processes, diversity, organizational culture, negotiations and conflict resolution, non-verbal interaction, and group and team processes. Research by micro faculty and students is renowned for its multi-method empirical approach, including experimentation, interventions, longitudinal and correlational research, and field work in organizations. Students with creative research ideas and those who relish experimental design and theoretical development are encouraged to apply. 

Training in the macro track focuses on the sociology of organizations and markets and students are trained to do research in areas including organizational culture, innovation, social networks, and entrepreneurship. Research by faculty and students in the macro track has a strong quantitative focus and uses computational social science to answer questions regarding organizational theory, innovation, social networks, culture, entrepreneurship, economic sociology, or the sociology of markets. Students with experience in statistical methods and/or computational data analyses are especially encouraged to apply. 

Micro track program

Immediately upon entry into the program, all PhD students will be actively engaged in multiple research laboratories to learn research skills and to conduct their own research. The first two years of coursework in the micro track of the MORS PhD program include rigorous training in research design and methods, statistical analysis, organizational behavior, social and cognitive psychology. In addition to taking courses taught by MORS faculty, students will have the opportunity to take courses from Berkeley's top ranked Psychology Department and courses taught by Behavioral Marketing faculty. After the first two years of course work, students will work closely with their primary and secondary advisors to complete their dissertations.

Macro track program

The first two years of coursework in the macro track of the MORS PhD program include rigorous training in research design, organizational theory, economic sociology and research methods. Students take several theory courses taught in Berkeley's top ranked Sociology Department as well as a theory sequence taught by macro MORS faculty. The curriculum also features a methods sequence aimed at training students to master computational methods and techniques. Unlike most Sociology PhD programs, the MORS PhD program admits only two to three students a year. This allows admission criteria to be extremely selective and likewise enables close guidance of students by faculty.

Students in each of the two MORS tracks enjoy the dedicated environment and resources in the program, as well as the many possibilities made available to social scientists on the Berkeley campus. The MORS PhD program boasts an excellent placement record, having populated the faculty ranks of the top universities in the country.
