Hartman-Glaser wants to know "how the presence of real estate affects the optimal portfolio problem of the individual investor and how this affects mortgage markets." He chose his field because "Finance represents the intersection of mathematics, money, and human behavior, three fundamental aspects of our existence. I chose to include Real Estate in my studies because as an asset class, real estate is truly unique. It is a durable consumption good, a capital investment, and it can't be moved. It is also an essential part of most people's personal portfolio."
