Departmental Overview
The Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership, Haas School of Business, at University of California, Berkeley prepares next-generation leaders with the practical business skills to found, lead, manage and govern in the social sector, creatively innovate and collaborate across sectors, and create winning solutions that produce social impact. The Center provides MBA and other graduate students an opportunity to augment the core business curriculum with specialized coursework, practical application, and career opportunities in public and nonprofit management.
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is a private family foundation created in 1964 by David Packard (1912-1996), cofounder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, and Lucile Salter Packard (1914-1987). The Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the following core program areas: Conservation and Science; Population; and Children, Families, and Communities. The Foundation makes grants at every level -- local, state, national, and international. For more than 40 years, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation has supported an array of nonprofit organizations in local communities. Currently, through its local Grantmaking Program the Foundation provides both general and project support to nonprofit organizations in the counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and also in Pueblo, Colorado, the birthplace of David Packard. Grants are made in five focus areas of the Foundation including the Arts, Children & Youth, Conservation & Science, Food & Shelter, and Population & Reproductive Health.
The Center and the Foundation have partnered to create this unique position for an outstanding individual to pursue post-academic opportunities within a professional learning experience in the philanthropic sector. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to participate in relevant professional development and program offerings at the Center and the Foundation.
Responsibilities
Potential projects include:
• Conducting a review and analysis of existing Local grants and grantee organizations
• Developing a profile for clusters of grants by subject area (e.g. arts, afterschool, etc.) and county (San Mateo, Santa Clara, Monterey, etc.) made through the Local Grantmaking program
• Developing reports on field trends that could benefit program grantees and the Foundation
• Assisting with the development of a Local communications strategy to help nonprofit organizations better understand the goals and outcomes of the Local Grantmaking Program, including investigating the use of social media tools and their application
• Assisting with the development and refinement of Grantmaking program evaluation plans
• Developing “stories” and “profiles” of grant results documenting community benefit
• Conducting due diligence on organizations applying for funding and making preliminary recommendations on Foundation involvement
• Assisting with due diligence on program related investments (loans)
Responsibilities include:
• Working with Local staff to conduct research and analysis
• Managing and reviewing written grant recommendations for community grants
• Providing written reports and/or giving presentations about projects to Local and Foundation staff, grantees, and/or funding partners
• Interacting with Foundation staff, grantees, funding partners, government agencies, and content experts as needed to complete assigned projects
• Organizing relevant community convenings on topics
• Other projects as assigned
An interim report summarizing the Program Fellow’s results to date will be produced at the midpoint of the fellowship and a final report summarizing the position’s results is required and a presentation of the project process, outcomes, and lessons learned will be shared with Local staff at the end of the position period.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in business, public management or policy, law, nonprofit management, urban planning or related fields
• Demonstrated ability to structure analysis, perform synthesis, and provide written reports and presentations that meet project objectives and timelines
• Demonstrated strong initiative, self-motivation, and ability to efficiently manage multiple simultaneous projects in diverse subprogram areas
• Excellent writing skills, which are essential to this position and the success of the candidate in the position
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team player
• Knowledge of and experience with nonprofit issues
• Strong verbal communication skills
• Comfort and ability to interact with diverse community organizations
• Proficiency with Microsoft Windows software including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
• Professional and responsive demeanor: efficient, knowledgeable, tactful, and confidential
• This position includes up to 10% travel time for professional development and meetings with Foundation grantees as required
Preferred Qualifications
• Graduate level education in business, public management or policy, law, nonprofit management, urban planning or related fields
Salary & Benefits
This is a fifteen month position with an end date. This position is full-time, and is classified as a Project/Policy Analyst 2. The salary will range up to $5,115 per month (equivalent to $61,380 annually).

Other Information
• The Foundation will provide office space in Los Altos, CA, IT support, and day-to-day supervision.
