Job Description:
The Walter A. Haas School of Business is one of the largest professional schools on the Berkeley campus, with 76 ladder-rank faculty and approximately 80 non-senate instructors, employing more than 150 staff, and serving over 2,100 majors. The School offers six degree programs — an upper division major, three MBA programs targeted to differing student populations, a Masters in Financial Engineering (MFE), and the Ph.D. in business administration. Additionally, the School operates non-degree executive education programs for business executives.
The Development and Alumni Relations department is responsible for all alumni relations and fund raising activity for the Haas School of Business. Alumni relations activities are conducted both on site at Haas School events, through the Haas@Cal online system, and through the extensive Haas Alumni Network. Fund raising activities include a wide-range of activities, including student campaigns, the annual fund, major gifts, foundation and corporate relations, the Haas School Advisory Board, and Dean’s activities allied with all these efforts.
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, the Director of Annual Giving works to:
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and structure gifts from individuals, focusing on unrestricted gifts up to $50,000.
- The Director works closely with the Executive Director, the Assistant Dean and the Dean, department chairs, program directors, senior level volunteers, and campus administrators to leverage and maximize unrestricted giving to the School.
- The position oversees all of Annual Programs’ volunteer-focused fundraising campaigns (which include over 100 volunteers within regions, reunion classes, class gift committees, student gift campaigns) and implements new programs to bridge the gap between annual and major gifts by soliciting and stewarding prospects with gift capacity of $5,000-$50,000.
- The Director has responsibility for managing relationships with some of the School’s most valued individual supporters from our alumni, parents, and closest friends. She/He must ensure that these relationships are nurtured and maintained for the benefit of the School and the University over time.
- As a development professional, the Director is expected to be an important resource of fundraising knowledge and expertise. The Director trains, manages, and motivates over 100 volunteers, as well as provides fundraising expertise to the Executive Director, the Assistant Dean, the Dean, program directors, and faculty members.
- Strong knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including strategies for donor identification, cultivation and solicitation.
- Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
- Strong knowledge of the campus, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives, applicable policies, infrastructure, and current issues of concern.
- Strong knowledge of management/leadership concepts, principles and best practices.
- Strong leadership/management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
- Strong written, oral and interpersonal communications skills and political acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
- Strong skills to meet predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals.
- Strong strategic planning skills and skills to conceive, design, implement, evaluate and manage fundraising programs and strategies.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills.
- Strong skills in persuasion/negotiation and strong marketing skills.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Strong marketing background or knowledge; ability to develop creative communications plans for senior volunteers through market analysis.
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Some local travel and national travel to conferences or meetings in New York and Los Angeles is required.
