Job Description:  

The Database Analyst will be a key member of the Development and Alumni Relations unit for the Haas School of Business providing technological services that allow the Development and Alumni team to make strategic decisions and effectively execute programs.  The position is responsible for generating multifaceted and complex data queries, writing reports using Crystal that draw from both the Haas School and campus wide databases, and developing applications in partnership with the Haas Computing unit to serve the needs of the School’s fundraising and alumni activities.  In addition, the position will play the role of technical liaison and collaborating partner between University Relations and Haas in the migration of the campus wide Datatel Benefactor database (CADS).   .

The Haas Development and Alumni Relations unit is responsible for planning, shaping and directing a comprehensive development and alumni relations effort for the Haas School of Business, one of the top-ranked business schools in the country.  Collectively, Haas Development raises over $10 million annually, which includes $3 million from the annual fund.  In addition, the alumni relations program serves 30,000 living alumni, oversees the activities of 22 chapters worldwide as well as 55 regional representatives, puts on high profile alumni events throughout the year, and manages Haas@Cal, an online community website that includes an interactive alumni directory, career network, and event calendar.

 


Plan and Program Management Reports 
Create and produce data reports requiring sophisticated ad-hoc querying and use of appropriate reporting tools such as Crystal Reports.  Reports will service the needs of the unit’s staff and include mailing lists, donor lists, campaign reports, and analysis.  Data will be pulled from CADS, the Haas warehouse and Raiser’s Edge.

Oversee database maintenance 
Serve as development and maintenance engineer for the Haas Warehouse.  In addition to creating and modifying Crystal Reports, this task includes adding or removing fields from the Haas warehouse, changing calculated fields, troubleshooting data download issues, and synchronizing data from a variety of other sources.  Establish policy and procedures for insuring the integrity of all data.  Set up and carry out synchronization of data between RE and CADS
 
Serve as Haas liaison for CADS migration and Haas warehouse 
Act as a technical and functional liaison between Haas Information Services, Haas Information Technology, and the University Relations technical team to insure all data systems support Alumni and Development business processes and standards. Work with University Relations Advancement Operations to synchronize data from University and non-University online applications.

 

The candidate should be experienced with querying and report writing applications and also have a basic understanding of fundraising to be able to customize desktop reports for the fundraising and alumni relations staff.  Overall, the candidate should be highly-motivated, detail-oriented, and computer literate as well as able to work well independently and as part of a team.  In addition, the candidate should have proven skills in maintaining, updating and manipulating large databases and a demonstrated understanding of processes and procedures for database management.  Accuracy and careful attention to detail are essential.  Must be well organized, able to meet deadlines, maintain a high level of productivity; set priorities, adapt to changing priorities, and effectively manage multiple tasks.  The person should be able to take initiative to develop and implement systems that improve function.  Strong customer service skills also required.  The candidate should have three to five years database management and report writing experience, and a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an IT-related field, or equivalent work experience.  Restricted vacation during peak periods and fiscal closing.   

The position requires:
•   Advanced knowledge of Crystal Reports and Excel
•   Strong skills in Microsoft SQL, Access and Word
•   Basic knowledge of Visual Basic and Java
•   Ability to do SQR queries
•   Experience and knowledge of SQL Server, Windows OS (2000 or XP) and HTML

PREFERRED SKILLS:
•   Experience with enterprise level development systems and supporting relational databases like Datatel Benefactor database (CADS) or BSR Advance
•   Excellent skills in Raiser’s Edge 7
•   Knowledge of fundraising and alumni relations
