Departmental Overview
The Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Walter A. Haas School of Business is an internationally recognized program and the primary locus at UC Berkeley for the study and promotion of corporate entrepreneurship and new enterprise development. Founded in 1991 with a generous gift from Howard Lester, CEO of Williams/Sonoma, the Lester Center fosters teaching of successful entrepreneurship and innovation, encourages Berkeley students in the creation of new businesses, creates and disseminates knowledge on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial finance to the business and university communities, facilitates interaction between the entrepreneurial community and the university, and seeks collaborations and partnerships in support of its goals.
The Executive Director is charged with the fundraising and alumni relations activities of the Lester Center, and generating external support sufficient to sustain the Center’s growth. The Executive Director is charged, as well, with management of the Center’s extra-curricular student programs, including experiential learning programs. The Executive Director works closely with the Center’s Co-Faculty Directors and the Haas School’s Senior Assistant Dean for Instruction, who manage the Haas School’s entrepreneurship curriculum, the Center’s research program, and the Center’s relationships with other UC Berkeley departments and academic institutions. The Lester Center is housed within the Institute of Business Innovation (formerly the Institute of Management, Innovation and Organization), an organized research unit that reports to the Dean of the Haas School. The executive director reports to the Faculty Director of the Institute of Business Innovation.
Responsibilities
The Executive Director will lead fundraising and alumni relations responsibilities and have primary responsibility for the development, management, and oversight of extra-curricular student programs, including experiential learning programs, under the umbrella of the Lester Center. The incumbent will work closely with the Center’s Co-Faculty Directors, the faculty director of the Institute of Business Innovation, and the Haas School’s Senior Assistant Dean for Instruction to support curricular and research activities.
Fundraising, Fiscal Management, and Employee Supervision
• Primary fundraising responsibility for the Center, from a variety of sources, to meet the Center’s annual budget.
• Cultivate and maintain relationships with long-term funding partners, and lead fundraising efforts with major donors.
• Manage all aspects of individual, foundation and corporate fundraising
• Develop a fundraising plan to meet Center’s strategic goals with support from Haas Development Office to identify new donor prospects
• Set performance standards and goals; hire, train, and develop staff to provide optimal program support
• Supervise the activities of staff to ensure that programs are executed flawlessly
• Create a teamwork environment fostering accountability, development and results
Program Development and Management
• Develop and manage the Center’s current portfolio of extra-curricular programs and activities to meet the strategic objectives of the Center
• Develop new and innovative extra-curricular activities, and oversee strategic projects that meet long-term objectives of the Center as a best-in-class entrepreneurship program
• Advocate for the Center among Haas and, in coordination with the Center’s Co-Faculty Directors, among UCB leadership. Liaise with Haas and UCB academic centers and programs to forge links to Center
• Inform students, faculty, staff, partners and organizers of ongoing research and developments in entrepreneurship
• Coordinate with the Center’s Co-Faculty to engage potential partner organizations/entities at UCB and externally for possible collaborations in entrepreneurship
• Coordinate with the Center’s Co-Faculty Directors and the Senior Assistant Dean for Instruction to enhance Center research opportunities and curriculum offerings and ensure entrepreneurial concepts are incorporated where appropriate in other courses
• Initiate and manage strategic long-term planning for the Center in conjunction with the in coordination with the Center’s Co-Faculty Directors and its Advisory Board
Required Qualifications
• MBA, plus a minimum of 10 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to the delivery of superior services and programs in higher education or the corporate sector related to entrepreneurship and innovation
• Expert knowledge of corporate entrepreneurship and innovation and strong familiarity and a working knowledge of technology-based entrepreneurship, new venture financing, , regional entrepreneurship acceleration, and social entrepreneurship
• Excellent fundraising skills with demonstrated experience fundraising for academic or corporate programs
• Advanced program development, marketing, strategic planning, organizational development, and analytical/problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to effectively network and build relationships with various internal and external constituencies
• Advanced oral and written communication skills
• Strong public speaking skills; ability to present strong and persuasive oral and written communications to effectively work with internal and external stakeholders
• Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to relate to student populations similar to ours at Haas.
• Success in leading high-performance teams
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Previous teaching experience and/or equivalent facilitation experience preferred
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time career position, classified by the university as an Academic Program Manager 2. The salary is commensurate with experience.
