  Grades

  Grades in the MBA program are based on the four-point system:
   A = 4
   B = 3
   C = 2
   D = 1
   F = 0
For plus and minus grades add 0.3 or subtract 0.3, with the exception of A+, which maintains 4 on the scale.

If you receive a grade below C-, those course units will not count toward the 51 units required for graduation. If you receive a grade lower than C- in a core course, you must repeat the course. You may repeat elective courses for which your grade is lower than C- , but it is not required. If you do repeat a course, your grade-point average will be recalculated once the grade for the repeated course is posted to the official record. You may not repeat courses for credit in which you receive a grade of C- or higher.

Some courses are offered on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory (S/U) grade basis. All Haas courses that you want to count toward your minimum 51 units for graduation (except those offered only as satisfactory/unsatisfactory courses), must be taken for a letter grade. Any course taken in excess of the required 51 units may be taken S/U.

Questions about the grading of any exam or assignment, including requests for re-grading, must be made within one week of the time that the exam or assignment is returned to you. All questions must be sent to your instructor in writing.

To obtain your grades, shortly after the end of the Fall or Spring semester, go to Bear Facts on the Web at http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu.

  Core Course Grades

  In the interest of greater fairness and more uniformity in grading across sections of core courses, the faculty have developed a core course grading policy.

Final grades in core courses will be distributed as follows:
   A = 15%
   A- = 20%
   B+ = 30%
   B = 20%
   B- or below = 15%

The bottom 15% includes B-, C+, C, C- and F.

Students who do not achieve a minimum mastery of the material will receive an F. Faculty members will make clear in their syllabi what constitutes minimum mastery. Each year, approximately 2-4% of students fail one or more core courses. Although it is most certainly not the faculty's desire to fail any student, or to fail a quota of students, you should realize that you will be in danger of receiving a failing grade if you do not put sufficient time and effort into your studies.

  Incomplete Grades

  You may be given an incomplete (I) grade when you are unable to complete all of the requirements for a course due to circumstances beyond your control. You must request the instructor's permission to receive an incomplete. If you have several incompletes, you should discuss plans for satisfying course and graduation requirements with the MBA Program Director.

When work for a course is completed late, you must petition the instructor for the grade. Petition forms and detailed instructions on how to remove an incomplete grade are available from the MBA Program Office. Separate petitions are required for changing each incomplete grade.

All course work (including Independent Study MBA293) must be graded and all incomplete grades removed by the last day of finals of the semester in which you intend to graduate. Late course work automatically postpones conferral of your degree to the following semester.

  Examinations

  You must take all of your final exams at their scheduled day and time. Alternate arrangements will be approved by the MBA Program Office only in the most unusual circumstances, such as illness or a death in the family.

The final examination schedule is posted early in each semester in the On-Line Schedule of Classes at http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Courses/schedule/.

Be sure to check the exam schedule before making any plans for the exam period. If you aren’t sure whether a class has a final exam, check with the instructor before making any plans that might conflict.

  Auditing

  Auditing courses is discouraged and faculty have the right to deny auditors without explanation. To audit a Haas course you must obtain approval of the course instructor and the MBA Program Director. Permission will not be granted if the stated class size has been reached with enrolled students, even if there are still empty seats. People who are not enrolled in a graduate degree program at the University of California, Berkeley, with the exception of Visiting Scholars, are not allowed to audit Haas MBA classes.
