Who can join?
The MBA Association (MBAA) represents the Haas Full-time MBA students. All Full-time MBA students are strongly encouraged to join the MBAA. MBAA membership is also extended to Haas Evening-Weekend (EWMBA) students. Membership in Haas student organizations is only open to MBAA members.
Students must pay a Services and Activities Fee to join the MBAA. The amount of this fee is determined annually by the MBAA. Recognizing that depending on the program, some students will not be able to attend all MBAA-sponsored events, the MBAA fee structure will differ by constituency groups as outlined below:
Full-time Haas MBA Students
We typically see greater than 98% participation in MBAA-sponsored activities from Full-time students. The Services and Activities Fee for Full-time MBA students is a one-time fee. The fee amount for 2008 is $500.
Evening-Weekend MBA Students
The Services and Activities Fee for Evening-Weekend students is a one-time fee. The fee amount for 2008 is $150. Students can join the MBAA at any point during their time in the program.
The fee for students transferring from the EWMBA to the FT MBA program, will be prorated based on the number of semesters left in the program and the Services and Activities Fee that current Full-time MBA students are paying.

Haas Student Organization Membership for non-Haas, UC Berkeley Graduate Students
The goal of this policy is to provide a channel by which Haas MBA students can interact with other UC Berkeley graduate students via student organization participation. This option is not available to Haas MBA students.
Haas student organizations reserve the right to extend membership to UC Berkeley graduate students. These students will not be charged MBAA fees; however the student organizations reserve the right to charge operational and event fees as they see fit. The goal of this policy is to provide a channel by which Haas MBA students can interact with other UC Berkeley graduate students. This option is not available to Haas MBA students.
If a non-Haas, UC Berkeley graduate student decides to join the leadership team of any Haas student organization, he or she will be considered to have joined the Haas community. These students will be required to do the following:
-Attend a mandatory workshop conducted by the MBA Student Services office in order to get acquainted with the staff and learn the policies and procedures of student organization operations.
-Pay the non-Haas, UC Berkeley graduate student fee as an indication of their commitment to the organization and Haas community. As of 2008, the non-Haas, UC Berkeley graduate student fee is $50/year.
-Students filling positions of liaisons between student organizations and their programs, who will not be involved in planning any events at Haas, are exempt from the above rule.
- Non-Haas, UC Berkeley graduate students are not entitled to the social benefits mentioned above, including attending MBAA-sponsored social events, such as consumption functions, bar-of-the-week, holiday parties, alumni events, etc.
- Non-Haas, UC Berkeley graduate students are not entitled to reimbursement from the MBAA for any activities for which Haas MBA students are eligible.
Student Organization Funding and Leadership
The MBAA uses some of the revenue from membership dues to support the 40+ student-run organizations supported by the Full-time MBA Program. The MBAA provides base funding to each student organization each semester, and then provides additional sponsorship funding for specific events such as conferences and firm nights. Each student who joins a student organization benefits from MBAA support. Therefore, the base funding that organizations receive will depend on the percentage of Haas student members in that organization.
As of 2008, the base funding is the following:
- Membership equal to or above 75% of Haas students - $100 / semester
- Membership less than 75% of Haas students - $0 / semester
All student organizations are required to submit their membership list and adhere to all relevant policies. Student Organizations eligible for funding must meet these requirements in order to receive their funding. Please contact the MBAA VP of Student Organizations if you feel that your organization has any extenuating circumstances and cannot provide its membership list.
All student organization leaders are required to attend introductory workshops organized by MBA Student Services Office in the spring semester. To assist with scheduling, a separate mandatory workshop may be conducted for the Evening-Weekend students in leadership positions.
The MBA Program Office works closely with student organization presidents regarding academic curriculum questions and other matters that pertain directly to the MBA Full-time program. Therefore, presidency positions should be filled with at least one Full-time MBA student.
