SAN FRANCISCO, CA - January 23, 2003 - Today, Trustees of the World Affairs Council of Northern California unanimously elected former Congressman Tom Campbell Chairman of the Board. Campbell is the Dean of UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and succeeds William H. Draper, III, General Partner and Cofounder of Draper Richards L.P., a venture capital firm based in San Francisco. Draper will remain on the Council Board's Executive Committee as Immediate Past Chairman.
"Tom Campbell has long been engaged in international issues, and he has a deep understanding of the practical implications of the policy choices Americans face. He is uniquely qualified to lead the Council", said World Affairs Council President and CEO Jane Wales. "While in Congress and as a Constitutional law professor at Stanford, Tom emerged as one of the country's foremost experts on the War Powers Act. His interests span issues of corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and the legal ramifications of prosecuting the war on terror. Much of the Council's programming has focused on the issues at the intersection of international policy and business practice. No one is better qualified to lead this discussion than Tom Campbell," said Wales, a former Senior Director of the National Security Council and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
At the Council's Board Meeting today, Trustees and staff welcomed Tom Campbell and paid tribute to Bill Draper for his two and a half years as Chairman of the Board. Fellow board member A.W. (Tom) Clausen, former Chairman and CEO of Bank of America and President of the World Bank, commented, "It's very impressive to see this caliber of leadership heading a non-profit. Companies would fight to have Bill or Tom advise them. The Council is fortunate, but it also speaks to the strength and unlimited potential of our organization." Draper commented on the election of Campbell, "We hit the jackpot when Tom Campbell agreed to be our new Chairman of the Board. With his wide experience, razor-sharp intellect, and warm personality, Tom will lift the Council to new heights."
Tom Campbell served in both the U. S. House of Representatives and the California State Senate. As an elected official and a Stanford law professor, Campbell wrote extensively on the limits of executive branch power, war powers and civil liberties. He has a law degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago.
William H. Draper, III has over 25 years of experience in the venture capital industry. Mr. Draper was a founder and General Partner of Sutter Hill Ventures in Palo Alto, CA. In 1986, he became the head of the United Nations Development Programme. Mr. Draper has served on the boards of the Institute of International Education, Institute of International Studies at Stanford University, Population Action International, and Yale University. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served as the Chairman of the World Affairs Council of Northern California from May 2000 until January 2003.
