Hello! My name is Romina Barrantes, and I am a freshman intending to major in Business Administration and Economics. I am an aspiring financial analyst interested in pursuing thorough analyses of financial assets to make good investment decisions in the future. Studying technology stocks’ performance on the financial market taught me the importance of examining the internal and external factors affecting a firm’s performance in the market through financial statement analysis (an internal factor) and an assessment of the economic environment affecting a firm’s operations (an external factor). Through the BCPA program, I aim to gain an in-depth understanding of accounting and finance that enables me to make successful investments throughout my professional career. Coming from a first generation, low-income background, I developed a genuine interest in accounting at a young age. This encouraged me to pursue a major in Economics and minor in Data Science. During my time at Cal, I took a few introductory accounting courses but never had the chance to dive deeper into the subject, so I’m excited that I got the opportunity to do so now. The BCPA program will give me the necessary foundation for a CPA certification and expose me to networking opportunities with the brightest in the field. I first heard about tax law through a movie about the late SCOTUS Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, wherein her husband was a tax lawyer. I had been searching for some field of law to focus on and decided that, if everyone else hated tax season, I would specialize in it so I wouldn’t have to hate it. That being said, I’m still not fully prepared for the daunting and grueling work that is to come with learning the tax code, tax deductions, tax politics, tax everything. I trust the BCPA program will bring me one step closer to that goal.

I am a rising junior, interested in tax and public policy. I hope to attend law school and complete a PhD in Economics after working for a few years after graduation. My dream is to one day be treasury secretary of the United States or chair the FED! I am interested in accounting because it’s another tool to understand and inform the decisions of firms, decisions that can either be incentivized or disincentivized by tax policies. I’m excited to be completing my tax and accounting units this summer in preparation for my internship with Deloitte next summer. I love debate and all things creative! By the end of this summer, I will have completed the 24-unit accounting requirements through the BCPA program, that would contribute to the rigorous courses needed for the CPA exam. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the BCPA program, which allows me to the necessary accounting classes in a smaller class size and cultivate better relationships with professors while completing an internship. Given my Sociology major, it can be challenging to schedule necessary accounting coursework during the fall and spring semesters, which makes the BCPA program an ideal fit for me. This summer, I am thrilled to be an audit intern at EY, and while my summer may be busy, I know that it will also be a very rewarding and exciting experience.

I currently wish to obtain the required credits to sit for the CPA exam. The BCPA program provides me with all the courses I need, on top of valuable networking opportunities to connect with working professionals in the largest firms. As a rising senior expected to graduate in 2024, I’ve spent my years at Cal experimenting with different career paths. After a bizarre journey committing myself to the study of music, then digital artistry, and finally economics, I found myself (almost accidentally) in the fortunate position of having a Youtube channel that reached a size where I could start building a team and a brand. Knowing that the creative and business fields are very disparate things, I decided to enroll in the BCPA to learn the “language of business”, set up back up career paths, and make life for my future self just a bit easier.
