We hope you can join us for the below Haas Happenings at Homecoming, on Saturday, October 19, 2019:

The Heroic Leader and LeadingX2

Daniel Granholm Mulhern, Lecturer in the Schools of Business, Public Policy, and Law

10:00-11:00am, Andersen Auditorium, Haas School of Business
Complimentary, no registration required

Why is it that when we think of leadership or leaders, we think of one person? What would happen if we questioned this nearly unquestionable assumption — that there is “a” leader, is “the” leader? Mulhern, his students, and his colleagues have been asking this question for years. In this talk, he explores the prevalence, power, and the practices of leading by two. He’ll invite you to examine your past, consider how your lessons stack up against his, and offer suggestions on how you might exploit the power of two in your efforts, leading in family, business, school, and other venues.

The Psychology of Confidence

Don A. Moore, Professor and Lorraine Tyson Mitchell Chair in Leadership and Communication, Haas School of Business

11:30am-12:30pm, Andersen Auditorium, Haas School of Business
Complimentary, no registration required

Reading self-help literature could leave you with the impression that your goal in life should be to maximize your confidence. On the other hand, research on overconfidence highlights all the ways in which people can get themselves into trouble by being too confident: deluding themselves with wishful thinking, taking too many risks, pursuing impossible goals, and wasting time on doomed ventures. Underconfidence, however, dissuades people from taking risks that would pay off and scares them away from trying things they would enjoy. Evidence highlights a promising middle way between these twin risks.
