We use Associated Press (AP) style as a baseline standard for all language and mechanics usage. Follow AP style in all cases except when it contradicts the information listed below.
Aim to use gender-inclusive terms whenever possible: alum/alums. When referring to a specific individual, ask them how they would like to be identified.
- Female singular: alumna

Only use ampersands (&) in proper names, and in headings/titles where appropriate. In text, use “and.”
Always capitalize “Black” when used in a racial, ethnic, or cultural sense.
We use the serial comma: a comma before the last item in a series. (For example: The Haas community consists of faculty, students, and staff.)
Do not use a comma before Ltd. or Inc. in company names.
Do not use commas before Jr. or Sr. following proper names.
Do not set course titles in quotation marks. Capitalize formal course titles, but leave course topics lower case.
For example: My favorite class is Organizational Behavior. We study organizational behavior in the first semester.

The terms “freshman” and “freshmen” should be avoided. Use “first-year student(s)” or “first-years” instead.
Job titles should be lowercase following the name and uppercase ahead of the name.
For example:
- Adobe Product Manager Lionel Richardson…
- Lionel Richardson, product manager at Adobe,…
- Interim Executive Director Susan Israel…
- Susan Israel, interim executive director…
Names of publications, such as books, magazines, blogs, and newspapers are italicized.
If italicizing is not an option, such as in a tweet, capitalize the title (using title case) or @mention the publication.
Use quotation marks for titles of articles and papers.
For example:
- She was quoted in the Forbes article “America’s Most Reputable Companies 2019.”
