Lucas Davis Energy Institute Faculty Affiliate, comments on the growing support for nuclear energy in the U.S., driven by rising electricity demand, new private investments, and a more pragmatic view among environmentalists on LAist.

“Environmentalists are increasingly being pragmatic. They’re looking around at electric vehicles, heat pumps, and data centers and saying, we need more electricity and when it comes to electricity generation, there’s no free lunch. The costs of coal are enormous, natural gas still emits carbon dioxide, and so more environmentalists are saying nuclear is the least bad option out there. We know we need a lot of electricity, and nuclear provides a large, reliable, low-carbon source of power.”
