Energy Institue Faculty Director, Severin Borenstien, provides insight on several factors contributing to the increasing price of California gas.

“So right now we are paying about a dollar and a half more than the average in the rest of the country. About a dollar of that is due to the  higher taxes we have on gasoline due to the various enviornmental programs including our cap and trade program and the low carbon fuel standard and due to the additional cost of producing the cleaner burning gasoline that we use in California, which is part of why you can see the mountains from Los Angeles these days.”
