The Current Electricity Rate System is Broken. Rate Reforms Will Make it More Equitable (Opinion)

Meredith Fowlie, Energy Institute Faculty Director sits down with the San Diego Union Tribune to comment on rising electricity costs and the development of an “income-graduated” electricity bill system.

“This electricity rate reform would create winners and losers. Most low-income households would see reductions in their electricity bills. Households like mine — higher-income households with rooftop solar — would pay more. Although I don’t love the idea of sending more money to my utility every month, I can see that the current system is broken, and I believe this reform can help fix it.”
