East Bay Alumni: Lake Chabot West Shore Trail Hike

September 14 @ 8:45 am - 11:00 am
Experience this 4.6-mile out-and-back trail near San Leandro along the west shore of Lake Chabot. It’s a moderately challenging route and takes two hours to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and running. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. Lake Chabot Reservoir was built in 1874-75 as a primary water source for the East Bay. The 315-acre lake was closed to recreation for 91 years. In the 1960s it was opened for controlled recreational uses. Today the lake is an emergency water supply. We’ll be walking on a paved trail along the west shore of Lake Chabot, which has great tree coverage. There are nice views of the lake and a few side trails to the lakeside itself. It’s a Historical Walk, so we’ll see a series of plaques describing the dam and its history along the way.
