Numerous Graduate Academic Student Employment opportunities are available to second-year students in several fields, especially accounting, economics, and communications. Roles in Graduate Student Instructorship (GSI), Graduate Student Researcher (GSR), Tutor, and Readers, etc. earn income and fee remission benefits. Fee remissions for the 2025-2026 academic year are up to $12,380.75 for each of the Fall and Spring semesters, which covers the Tuition, Student Services Fee, Berkeley Campus Fee, and UCB Health Insurance Fee. The earned income for the same position is approximately $4,000.
You can apply for the ASE positions in the Spring of your first year. If you have significant training in a specialized area, you may also find employment as a reader or tutor. Fee remissions could impact your financial aid. If you already have aid up to the cost of attendance, your financial aid will have to be adjusted to accommodate the fee remission, as your total aid cannot exceed the cost of attendance. For more information, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
Please note that if you have a Third Party Contract (TPC) in place that covers Tuition, Berkeley Campus Fee, Health Insurance Fee, and the Student Services Fee, you are not eligible for fee remissions. If your authorization letter states that the sponsorship is to be treated as a loan then you remain eligible for fee remissions, however, your TPC will be reduced by the fee remissions applied to your CalCentral account. In either case, fee remissions will not be paid to the student as a refund if fees are being covered by a sponsoring agency.
For those who waive the student health insurance, the Health Insurance Fee will not be triggered to your account, so expect a lower partial fee remission.
