Dr. Mekki MacAulay holds a PhD in Strategic Management from the Schulich School of Business, York University, specializing in open source strategy for technology companies, a Master of Applied Science in Technology Innovation Management from Carleton University, focusing on technology innovation and entrepreneurship, and dual bachelor’s degrees in Engineering (Computer Systems, with distinction) and Psychology from Carleton University, with expertise spanning open source development, innovation strategy, and behavioral psychology.

Dr. Mekki MacAulay is an open source strategy researcher and practitioner who currently works in at IBM as Senior Global watsonx Data & AI Product Manager & Trusted Executive Advisor. His research focuses on the open source subset of the broader open innovation landscape, tying together his professional computer systems engineering (PEng) practice background with modern business school strategic management theory (MASc, PhD). He has given numerous academic and industry talks on open source strategy and founded the IBM Open Source Strategy Consulting Practice in 2019.

A veteran of open source since the 1990s, Dr. MacAulay’s current focus is on leveraging the lessons learned from the Linux revolution to democratize artificial intelligence amongst open source communities in a similar fashion, with new AI business models fuelling novel (open!) innovative approaches for the decades to come. He lives in Toronto with his partner and five cats who frequently join his virtual meetings.
