Research Labs
Research labs provide dedicated spaces for faculty to conduct experimental studies, both in-person and online, and are shared across groups within Haas. Our research labs offer opportunities for faculty and PhD students to conduct research and also provide opportunities for students and community members to engage in the research process.
Behavioral Lab, “BLab”
BLab offers comprehensive support for behavioral research on business-related topics, such as cognition and behavior in small groups and larger organizational contexts. The BLab provides opportunities for UC Berkeley students to engage directly with the research process, contributing to and learning from social science studies.
Experimental Social Science Laboratory, “XLab”
XLab facilitates behavioral and social decision-making experiments. The lab welcomes participation from all UC Berkeley students and staff, offering an average compensation of $20 per hour. Participants play an active role in the research process, helping to advance social science studies through direct engagement.
Faculty Labs
Faculty labs are led by MORS professors and serve as centralized groups for specialized research, bringing together postdoctoral scholars, PhD students, and related collaborators on a regular basis. Faculty labs focus on advancing the faculty member’s specific research agenda, fostering mentorship and scholarly development.
SOMO Lab
The Social and Moral Judgment Lab (“SOMO”) led by Juliana Schroeder and Clayton Critcher conducts experiments to understand how people make social and morally relevant decisions in everyday situations. The lab explores behavioral science questions, shedding light on the factors that shape social judgments and decision-making processes.
HIGHER Lab
The HIGHER Lab, led by Sa-kiera T.J. Hudson, explores social hierarchies—how they form, are maintained, and interact. The lab investigates emotional drivers of intergroup harm, the role of stereotypes in reinforcing hierarchies, and how misconceptions about progress shape perceptions of equality, advancing understanding of intergroup conflict and social inequality.
A&P Lab
The Authenticity and Perception Lab (APL), led by Erica R. Bailey, examines the psychological construct of authenticity and its relationship to self- and social perception. Through experimental and archival research, the lab explores how people experience and express authenticity, uncovering how it shapes interpersonal dynamics, social norms, and psychological well-being.
Computational Culture Lab
The Computational Culture Lab, co-founded and co-led by Sameer Srivastava, leverages computational methods and data science to measure culture and model its evolution. Focusing on cultural dynamics within organizations and beyond, the lab develops new theories and practical tools that inform policy and organizational design. It operates virtually across UC Berkeley and Stanford University, with projects spanning topics like politics, consumption, and collective behavior.
Data Innovation Lab
The Data Innovation Lab, led by Abhishek Nagaraj and UC Berkeley alum Matteo Tranchero, explores the role of data and AI in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity. The lab explores how data-driven technologies shape the future of organizations and society, offering insights into the evolving intersection of economics, technology, and management.
