Launching our New Dynamic Capabilities Program

BERKELEY, CA – June 2026 – The Open Innovation Labs at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business is proud to announce the launch of our new Dynamic Capabilities Program, supervised the Pioneer of Dynamic Capabilities himself, the UC Berkeley Professor, Dr. David Teece, the world’s most cited scholar in the filed of Business and Management.

The goal of the Program is to help companies navigate AI transformation and strategic innovation through the application of Dynamic Capabilities and Open Innovation, guided by world-leading pioneers, while enabling the future generations of UC Berkeley students to study Dynamic Capabilities through industry collaboration.

Background

Decades ago, Professor David Teece embarked on a journey to understand why some companies thrive for generations, knowing how to pivot, adapt to new trends, and remain competitive, while others fall behind. Professor Teece has identified three core capabilities that a firm needs to develop, and proactively exercise – Sense, Seize and Transform:

  1. Sense: Actively identifying external opportunities – what customers want, market gaps, and new trends – while simultaneously auditing internal knowledge and resources.
  2. Seize: Capturing the opportunity by strategically leveraging both internal and external resources.
  3. Transform: Reconfiguring the organization to capture the most value from the seized opportunity in a sustainable way.

Dynamic Capabilities is a proven framework that also provides a structured, highly effective way to apply Open Innovation.

Program Goal

Our program aims to channel decades of rigorous research to help firms accelerate growth, with a heavy focus on the strategic reasoning process. In the current AI era, where so many organizations are struggling to figure out how they fit into a rapidly shifting market, applying these frameworks is more critical than ever.

This initiative enables future generations of UC Berkeley students and executives to study the Dynamic Capabilities framework and Open Innovation, applying these concepts directly in collaboration with leading firms.
