Coming to Campus
General Requirements
Beginning Jan. 26, 2021, Campus requires all visitors to take a community surveillance test (E. Whitlock announcement here) with University Health Services, and to present the test confirmation (a Green-coded badge) to Haas Facilities building monitors before gaining entry.

Before planning your visit to Haas or Campus, you must complete all the one-time training below from the UC Learning Center:
On-site workers would need to complete the following health and safety requirements, as outlined in AVC Eugene Whitlock’s Oct. 1 email:
(FOR USERS WITH RECURRING ACCESS, OR THOSE WHO REQUIRE CARD KEY ACCESS ONLY)
It is important to keep your Cal1 Card current. Cards with issue dates of Jan. 2007 and older are obsolete, and will be unable to operate card key access.
Check the issue date on the front of the card, or the numerical string at the bottom of the back. Newer cards would show a numerical string which begins with six digits. If your code begins with a five-digit string, then the card is old and needs to be replaced.
To get a replacement card, visit:
- Cal1 Card COVID-19 Update page (find section towards bottom for Employees and Affiliates With Obsolete Cards)
ℹ NOTE: if you have more than one Cal1 Card (some retain old cards, even when these have already been replaced), please remember to use your newest or latest card, as this will be the card which the Cal1 Card Office will provide with access.
One-Time or Short-Term Access
- Complete all the requirements listed in the above section: COVID-19 Training and Health & Safety sections.
- Get in writing (email) your supervisor’s approval for your visit.
- Attach your supervisor’s approval in an email to fixit@haas.berkeley.edu.
- After submitting the email, Haas Facilities will contact you to schedule your visit.
The UC Berkeley Public Health Committee recommends that Surveillance Testing be applied to employees who are on Campus for more than one hour/day, or who come to Campus more than one time per week. Employees do not need to test if they come to Campus one time/week for a duration of less than one hour.
- If you are coming to Haas one time, for less than an hour duration, you can skip ahead to Step 2. Otherwise, please have your Green badge ready to show to building monitors upon entry.
- Complete the Campus Daily Symptom Screener (needs to be completed for each day you are planning to be at Haas/Campus).
- Wear a face covering. No face covering, no entry – and no exceptions.
- During your visit, if you need access assistance, please contact Haas Facilities at 510-643-4948.
ℹ Note: entry is given only to faculty or staff members with approved access and scheduled appointments. No companions (spouses, family members, friends, or other unapproved entities) are allowed.
Effective June 1, 2020, UC Berkeley Parking & Transportation requires parking permits or parking fees for all Campus parking facilities.

Recurring or Short-Term Activity-Based Access
- Complete all the requirements listed in the above section: Surveillance Testing & Badge System, COVID-19 Training, and Health & Safety.
- Make sure your Cal1 Card is valid.
- Get first-level approval:
- For Instructional Purposes – Ladder Faculty should contact Catherine Wolfram or Sunil Dutta. Professional Faculty should contact Jay Stowsky.
- For Staff/GSIs – staff who need to support essential operations or instruction should first get approval from their supervisor. Those who need to use a room or space for any activity or for your recurring work, please email Meg Fellner for activity approval, room reservations, and space density requirements.
- For Research – office-based research for faculty is only allowed if faculty need access to on-campus resources. Ladder Faculty should contact Catherine Wolfram or Sunil Dutta for first-level approval.
- Complete the Haas Facilities Building Access Request Form.
- After completing the form, your request will be reviewed by both the Haas Building Oversight Committee (chaired by Courtney Chandler and Dean Ann Harrison) and the UC Berkeley Joint Planning Committee on Academic Buildings (JPCAB). Please allow 7-10 business days for this process to complete.
- When accepted, you should receive an approval email from Campus.
- Your card access should be ready to use three (3) business days after receiving the approval email.
- If possible, when starting your Recurring Access period, test your card key access at Haas building entrances in both Main Campus buildings (Faculty, Cheit, and Student Services) and Chou Hall. Should any entrance access fail, please note the date, time and entrance location in an email to fixit@haas.berkeley.edu, or in a phone call to Facilities at 510-643-4948.
If you are coming to Campus and interacting with others, you should schedule a Surveillance Test that morning before you come to work.
- Have your Green badge ready to present to the building monitor upon entry.
- Complete the Campus Daily Symptom Screener prior to each day you will be on Campus.
