Overview
The goal of this policy is to standardize the equipment, software, and support available to Haas PhD students from Haas Technology Solutions (TS). This policy will help enable their work and support the mission of the school. To promote flexibility, we are also outlying how we will support PhD students who prefer working off of their personal laptops.
Please note that TS-provided computers and equipment are furnished, allocated and/or replaced, based on budget availability, supervisory approval and compliance with applicable TS lifecycle replacement policies.
These computers and equipment were designed to be used within a shared workspace environment (similar to hoteling stations), and should not be personalized* or removed from their assigned locations so that they remain accessible to multiple (present and future) PhD students.
*e.g. avoid saving files locally
ℹ Note: This policy describes future plans and not a current option available for request. Subject to budget changes.
Acceptable Use
Haas TS-provided computers are subject to UC Berkeley’s overarching Computer Use Policy.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
To provide a more streamlined desk setup, Haas TS’s goal will be to outfit PhD student desks with collaboration hub monitors (budget permitting) to offer PhD’s the option to use their own laptops, which they may customize to their own preferences.
Benefits:
- No administration assistance required, you manage your machine as you see fit.
- Necessary research software available via software.berkeley.edu.
- Charging, network, webcam, speakers, mic, and display connection via collaboration hub monitor.
What Is Covered:
- Monitor: 1 Dell monitor (docking station integrated).
- Computer: 1 Dell PC with the standard Berkeley desktop (Windows OS).
- Peripherals: A wired mouse and keyboard set.
NOTE 1: The monitor will have an integrated hub/docking station. Via a USB-C cable, students may connect their laptops to utilize the monitor’s display, charging capability, ethernet connection, and built-in webcam/microphone/speakers. No other adapters will be provided by Haas TS to enable connection to these monitors.
NOTE 2: The computer specs will remain at a standard and will not be upgraded to provide more computing power. If more computing power is required, students may request access to Haas Research server instances by emailing [email protected]. Research Computing information page.
NOTE 3: Haas TS-provided computers and peripherals are property of UC Berkeley and shall remain assigned to the desk, not any specific user. If you are moved to another desk, the equipment at your previous station will not be moved.
- Adobe (PDF Reader/Editor)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Web browsers (Edge, Chrome, Firefox)
- UC Berkeley-provided standard antivirus

To improve security and maximize the computer’s lifespan, TS will not be providing administrative privileges nor install any non-standard software on the computers. If you require any speciality software, we recommend bringing in your own computer and connecting it to the monitor hubs.
- Haas TS, along with Central Campus ITCS, will provide general support for Campus-offered software (Adobe, Word, Chrome)
- Haas TS will maintain support for the hardware
- Haas TS will maintain and provide access to Haas Research Servers
