The Haas Undergraduate program will be phasing out the Global Management Concentration. Haas students who are interested in completing the GMC will have up until Summer 2023 to submit the GMC worksheet to declare the concentration.

The Haas Global Management Concentration is a rigorous program for UC Berkeley business majors who are truly dedicated to pursuing an internationally oriented education and career. This program enables Haas students to study abroad, improve language skills, and pursue a variety of international business and area studies courses. In recognition of the rigor of this program, the concentration will be noted on the final transcript and on a certificate from the Haas School of Business.

All course work for the GMC will need to be completed at UC Berkeley or abroad through either the Education Abroad Program (EAP) or any other UC-transferable program. College course work from accredited schools prior to enrollment at UC Berkeley may not apply.

The concentration has four components and the courses can be completed at UC Berkeley or abroad:

International Study

At least one semester abroad through either the Education Abroad Program (EAP) or any other UC-transferable program.

Language Study

Completion of the 3rd year level of a language at UC Berkeley (or equivalent.)

There are several ways to complete this requirement:

  • Completion of the 6th semester of a language at UC Berkeley or while abroad. One upper-division foreign literature course may double-count between the Language Study requirement and the Area Studies requirement.
  • Complete the 4th semester of a language at UC Berkeley and spend at least one semester abroad where instruction is in the same language.

International Business Courses

UGBA 178: Introduction to International Business plus 3 international business electives.

The three international business electives:

  • Must be about international (or comparative) business
  • Must be upper-division
  • Must all be completed for letter grades
  • Must be worth at least 2 semester units each for a total of at least 8 semester units
  • May be taken at UC Berkeley or abroad
  • May be offered by departments such as Business Administration, Economics, Management, etc.

Business courses will count towards the required 38 upper-division business units and non-business courses (ECON 115 – The World Economy in the 20th Century for example) will count towards the required 12 upper-division non-business units.

Area Studies Courses

Three upper-division non-business that have an international or comparative focus. Language courses do not fulfill these requirements and no more than one of the courses can be a literature course.

The three courses:

  • Must be upper-division
  • Must be worth at least 2 semester units each for a total of at least 8 semester units
  • May be taken P/NP basis, in accordance with the usual policies
  • May be taken at UC Berkeley or abroad
  • Can fulfill the required 12 upper-division non-business units
  • Can fulfill breadth requirements, as appropriate

Declare the GMC by completing the required courses and submitting a completed GMC worksheet (.pdf) by e-mail attachment to [email protected] no later than the last day of classes in the semester you graduate or by September 1, 2023 by 11:59pm (PST).

The worksheet will be reviewed for approval. Upon approval, your information will be sent to the Registrar’s office. The registrar will include the completion of the GMC to your transcript. It will appear on the bottom section of the transcript, not on the diploma.
