SUMMARY:San Francisco Alumni: Spring Hike and Whale Watching at Devil's Slide
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Haasies for a relaxed coastal hike along the beautiful Devil’s Slide Trail located between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. We’ll start at the South Parking Lot\, walk north along the cliffs to the North Parking Lot\, and then loop back—an easy out-and-back route with sweeping Pacific views. This is a casual\, social hike designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone. \nThe hike will begin promptly at 10:00 AM and will take approximately one hour to complete (2.4 miles round trip). Parking is free but limited\, so please plan to arrive early. Comfortable walking shoes\, layers for coastal weather\, sun protection\, and water are recommended. The trail is paved and relatively flat. Dogs on leash are permitted on the trail.   We’re particularly excited about this hike because mid-April is peak gray whale migration season. This time of the year\, northbound gray whales often pass surprisingly close to shore\, so keep an eye on the horizon as you may spot a fin or a tail from the trail. The cliffs are also home to nesting seabirds such as peregrine falcons\, pigeon guillemots\, Brandt’s cormorants\, and Western gulls. Benches along the trail offer great vantage points to pause and watch the waves\, and you may also spot sea lions or dolphins offshore.   Looking forward to a great morning walk by the ocean! \nQuestions? SUMMARY:University of California Open Summit (UC Open) 2026
DESCRIPTION:As open source reshapes research\, infrastructure\, and how academia connects with industry\, the UC Open Source Summit 2026 brings together two days of collaboration and partnership. Researchers\, developers\, students\, and industry leaders from across the University of California system will explore what’s next—from AI’s impact on academia to building sustainable research infrastructure. \nDiscover emerging UC projects before they reach the mainstream\, build partnerships on production-ready technologies\, and connect with the next generation of contributors. Whether you’re looking for research partners\, hiring talent\, solving technical problems\, or contributing expertise back to the academic open source community\, UC Open 2026 connects university innovation with real-world application. \nThis isn’t just another conference. UC Open is: \n\n\nGenuinely enjoyable: we build in breaks long enough to recharge your attention span and have real conversations. \n\n\nSmall but mighty: our deliberately limited capacity means you’ll leave with real relationships\, not just business cards. Every conversation matters when you’re part of a curated community rather than a sea of strangers. \n\n\nWarmly collaborative: this event is for humans\, not sales pitches. Whether you’re a researcher\, maintainer\, contributor\, or simply curious about open source innovation\, you’ll find your people here. \n\n\nThanks to the generosity of our sponsors\, UC Open is free to attend for all participants! We will provide breakfast and lunch on both days\, as well as an evening reception on Wednesday. When you register you will be asked to provide any dietary restrictions or concerns. \nRegister Here
