SUMMARY:World Refugee Week with 1951 Coffee
DESCRIPTION:With the founding of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)\, the 1951 Refugee Convention in Geneva\, Switzerland first defined who a refugee is and laid out the protections people should be afforded when fleeing war\, conflict\, and violence. 1951 Coffee Company was founded in that same spirit: coming together to provide safety\, welcome\, and employment for those seeking to call the United States home. \n2026 marks the 75th Anniversary of the signing of the 1951 Refugee Convention. This document knit the world together with a framework of shared humanity\, protection\, and hope. \nAt this special World Refugee Week event: \n\n\nBusiness Community Networking \n\n\nSpecial 75th Anniversary Product Launch in Partnership with USA for UNHCR \n\n\nLimited Edition Summer Drink Menu \n\n\nFundraising for 1951 Coffee’s training and business support programs \n\n\nStorytelling \n\n\nLive Barista Demonstration \n\n\n1951 Coffee Graduate Business Showcase \n\n\nHosted by the 1951 Coffee Company Board of Directors.  \nIn addition to supporting 1951 Coffee Company\, $5 of each ticket sold goes to USA for UNHCR.  \nAbout US:  \nAt 1951 Coffee Company\, we blend the warmth of coffee with the strength of community. \nWe are a non-profit (501c3) social enterprise that works with refugees and immigrants to break down the financial and social barriers of starting a new life in the United States. \nFounded in 2015 by Rachel Taber and Doug Hewitt\, 1951 Coffee operates a free Barista Training Program serving refugees and immigrants (40 adults and 25 youths per year) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over 520 people have graduated from this program since 2016. 1951 Coffee also operates its own cafe location just two block south of the UC Berkeley campus at 2410 Channing Way. This cafe location serves as a convergence point for the immigrant community and the larger Bay Area community. Having employed 77 people\, the cafe currently employs 10 immigrant staff in multiple entry level and leadership roles. The cafe program at 1951 Coffee has put $2.4million in wages and benefits into the immigrant community since 2017.  Starting in 2021\, 1951 Coffee began offering business incubation support for graduates of their program. Since that time the team at 1951 Coffee has helped 14 immigrant lead businesses start in the SF Bay Area\, San Diego\, and Pittsburgh\, PA. \nRegister
