The Haas Management of Organizations PhD program equips doctoral students with the tools to apply foundational social science theories and research methodologies to the study of organizations, their members, and the surrounding environment. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in academic research, with graduates typically securing positions at universities and research institutions worldwide.

Job Market Candidates

Nicholas Otis (opens in a new tab)
Nick Otis is on the 2024-2025 job market. His Job Market Paper titled “Does Generative AI Crowd Out Social Learning? Evidence from a Field Experiment with Entrepreneurs” explores how artificial intelligence shapes entrepreneurial performance and strategy. In his research, he is especially interested in understanding how technology can enable underserved people, places, and firms.

Saqib Mumtaz (opens in a new tab)
Saqib Mumtaz is on the 2024-2025 job market. His Job Market Paper titled, “Lost in Translation? Science Communication And the Commercial Diffusion of Ideas,” examines the impact of scientific translation – communication of scientific ideas using a simple, non-technical language on how firms utilize scientific knowledge. This study is part of his broader research agenda, which focuses on the role of communication and the media in the diffusion of scientific knowledge to firms and policymakers.

Micro-OB PhD Students
Micro-track PhD students are trained to become academics active in areas including judgment and decision-making, status and power, organizational culture, gender, ethics, diversity, the self, negotiations, and nonverbal interactions. Research by faculty and students in the micro track is primarily empirical, often using field and laboratory studies and experiments to collect and analyze data.

Macro-track PhD students are trained to become academics active in areas including social networks, innovation, economic sociology, organizational culture, and entrepreneurship. Research by faculty and students in the macro track has a strong quantitative focus and uses computational social science to make inferences based on large-scale data.
