Energy Economists Gather at Berkeley for 2024 Energy Camp

August 6, 2024

The Energy Institute’s annual Energy Camp provides a dynamic and collegial environment for sharing new energy and environmental economics research ideas among senior scholars, young faculty, and advanced graduate students. Each day of this week-long event includes six to nine presentations of research-in-progress and early research ideas. The days also include substantial unprogrammed blocks when researchers meet in small groups to discuss new and on-going collaborations. This year researchers presented on topics including federal climate policy impacts, renewable energy planning, increased electrification of vehicles and households, the future of oil, utility regulation, and residential electricity pricing. The intense days were balanced with casual evening events to connect and relax. We enjoyed a communal dinner with families, a long hike through the beautiful Tilden Park and pizza, beer and lawn games on campus.

The 2024 Energy Camp hosted 60 researchers from 27 universities across the globe over the week of June 24th. Many started coming to Energy Camp as graduate students and now continue to come as professors and bring their graduate students. Camp culture strives to be inclusive, instructive and supportive of new talent and ideas.

For twenty years, Energy Camp has proven to be a critical venue for idea generation that has led to the formation of many important research projects by participating faculty and students. We often hear from attendees that it is their favorite week of the summer!
