Featuring Steve Nagai-Ma

Join us for our first virtual conversation on “Building Social Movements” led by Steve Nagai-Ma (he/him). Steve played a key role in the passage of a number of environmental, consumer, and health-related laws in the US, including his award-winning work on reducing the influence of money in politics. More recently, Steve has trained and advised hundreds of non-profit organizations and social enterprises that are impacting millions of people around the world.

In the first talk of CSSL’s spring Lunchtime Speaker Series, Steve will share some of the key elements that were essential to the success of a variety of large-scale social change efforts, drawing on his 30-year career as a change maker and advocate. He will also preview several of the key concepts that he plans to cover in the Social Movements course he will teach with CSSL this fall.

Holden Lee, with over a decade of experience as Chief Investment Officer and Chief Financial Officer for significant philanthropic pools, addressed how the rapidly-evolving sector of impact investing continues to create unique opportunities and catalyze capital in the public, private, and philanthropic sectors.

In partnership with the Dean’s office, we are excited to have the President and General Manager of the WNBA team – Golden State Valkyries join us for a fireside chat discussion. Jess & Ohemaa will discuss their careers in the sports industry, how they are leading in the creation of an expansion franchise, and the influence and societal impacts of women’s sports. There will be time for an audience Q&A session at the end.

With the existential threat of climate change increasing unabated, investors look for technologies that can turn back the climate clock in scalable and profitable ways. Our expert panel discussed the viability of ocean carbon removal as a climate panacea and sustainable business model.

“Voices for Change” highlights varying levels of leadership across industry and generation. The intergenerational panel consisted of Anthony Chavez—Education advocate and grandson of the renowned social impact leader, Cesar Chavez—and Eric Cortes—youth voices advocate and UC Berkeley student, with arts education leader Cristy Johnston Limon.
