Deadline & Decisions

Decisions are based on a comprehensive evaluation of submitted application materials. Applications are accepted as early as September. We only guarantee the review of applications that are complete by 8:59 p.m. (PST) on December 1, 2018.

Statement of Purpose and Personal History Statement

All applicants are required to submit two essays with their application. These are the Statement of Purpose and Personal History Statement. When you start your online application you will see the two prompts that should be answered in their entirety. For each essay please include your full name and “Statement of Purpose” or “Personal History Statement” as the heading. Although there is no minimum or maximum page limit responses should be reasonable in length.

For more information regarding the statement of purpose please click HERE.

For more information regarding the personal history statement please click HERE.

University Transcripts

We require that you scan and upload a transcript from each university that you attended. The institution’s name and expected or conferred degree must be visible on the transcript. If you already graduated, then the conferral date must appear on the transcript or you will need to include a scanned image of your diploma with your transcript. Photographs of transcripts are not acceptable. It is very important to ensure the uploaded transcript is readable. An illegible transcript will delay our review of your application. Note that separate transcripts for units that were transferred from a previous institution are not required if the courses, units, and grades are included on the transcript you submit.

If your transcript is in a language other than English, then you must provide an official translation issued from your university or by certified members of the American Translators Association. Upload your original transcripts and the official translation as one PDF.

Please note that any discrepancy between the uploaded transcript and the official transcript could result in the denial of your application or withdrawal of your offer of admission.

Three Letters of Recommendation

We only accept three letters of recommendation. Including more than three letters of recommendation will result in a delay with your application review.

Recommenders may be either academic or non-academic and should be able to evaluate your potential for graduate study and can comment on your potential to succeed in a doctoral program. Once you add a recommender to your application, he or she will receive an email with instructions to upload their letter. You may submit your application after all three recommenders have been added to your application. You do not need to wait for your recommenders to upload their letters before submitting your application.

We are not accepting hard copies of letters of recommendation. If your recommender cannot submit their letter of recommendation online, please contact us.

GRE and GMAT Official Score Report

The institutional code for the GRE is 4833. The institutional code for the GMAT is N2V-PT-06. There is NO department code. The test must be taken within five years of application deadline. Arrange to have official score reports sent directly to UC Berkeley by the December admissions deadline. All international applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to take an English proficiency test. You may take the TOEFL or the IELTS to satisfy this requirement. You must take the TOEFL or IELTS even if some or all of your classes were taught in English. If you choose to take the IELTS test, your most recent band score must be at least a 7 on a 9-point scale.
