Severin Borenstein, Energy Institute Faculty Director, discussed on AirTalk how AI-powered gas pricing software may contribute to higher California gasoline prices and emphasized that its legality depends on whether it coordinated pricing among competing gas stations.

“SEVERIN BORENSTEIN: If they are actually aware of the other stations are also using the algorithm, or even beyond that, they are coordinating the use of this algorithm among stations, then there’s a serious antitrust case, and I think a serious possibility that this is inflating gasoline prices.”
