Our March highlights include the publishing of our latest Impact report— check it out to learn about all we accomplished in 2021. Genevieve gave a presentation on our work on mitigating bias in artificial intelligence at the AI Ethics Summit in San Francisco. Lastly, one of our partners, theBoardlist, has put together an event series focused on increasing representation in the boardroom.

To kick off the new year, EGAL has welcomed five new Advisory Council members to our board and 14 new research grantees! Furthermore, we are thrilled to announce EGAL’s first endowment, a $1M donation from the Liang and Kuo Family.

EGAL proudly launched our newest playbook, Advancing Language for Racial Equity and Inclusion accompanied by the launch of Responsible Language Guide for Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning.
Genevieve Smith & Julia Nee recently presented a paper building from our work on responsible language in AI at the ACM Conference on Equity and Access in Algorithms, Mechanisms and Optimization. Laura Kray & Margaret Lee recently published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal discussing their EGAL funded research.

In July, EGAL members celebrated some major accomplishments: Derek Brown was published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Laura Kray published articles on gender disparities in pay and bias in the workplace, and Heidi Ridley and her co-founder Kathryn McDonald launched Radiant ESG Global Investors. EGAL was invited to present at the Academy of Management Conference and hosted a DEI roundtable. Way to go EGAL!

In the month of April, EGAL successfully hosted our fourth annual Investing in Inclusion Pitch Competition. Although virtual, our competition attracted talent from across the country and awarded the first prize to The Equity Network. Genevieve and Ishita highlight concerns with bias in AI and how to advance equity. Lastly, we prepare to launch a three part series on using language to advance racial equity and inclusion.

As this year’s Black History Month comes to a close, we want to continue celebrating the lives and legacies of the Black business leaders, influencers, and creative works in the present day that inspire us. This month’s newsletter includes a featured resource that shares who to know, follow, and read for inspiration and ways to create change.
In February, we look back on Professor Pledge commitments professors at the business school made to to utilize and advance case studies with diverse protagonists and cases on topics related to DEI. EGAL’s very own, Genevieve Smith, writes on this topic in EquityEd for those who want to learn more. Additionally, we feature Dr. Kellie McElhaney’s podcast episode from Qualtrics Industries’ Breakthrough builders, learn from FTMBA EFL leaders, and look forward to Dr. Kellie McElhaney’s feature in two major virtual convenings in March!

December is full of exciting updates! We are pleased to announce that we are hosting the Investing in Inclusion Pitch Competition in April. In addition to this, we’ve launched our virtual whiteboard of anti-racist commitments on the EGAL website. October is coming to an end, but EGAL’s commitment to equity is ramping up. This month’s highlights include, EGAL’s newest playbook, Transforming Businesses Beyond COVID-19, and an exciting speaker event with Lieutenant Governor of California, Eleni Kounalakis, coming later this year! EGAL also launched an exciting new project, the personal anti-racism commitments white board, and the successful Gender Identity 101 session hosted by two of our MBA students, Kendall Bills and Fayzan Gowani.
