Independent Study

Professors Adair Morse and John Coates (energy biology) are looking for team for an independent study.  ExxonMobil originally asked us a deceptively simple question: what would it take to produce and process one million dry tonnes of seaweed annually at a cost approaching $100/tonne? Answering that requires designing the entire system from first principles – where farms should be located; seedstock production and distribution; farm design; disease and pest management; automation; harvesting; stabilization of wet biomass; transportation and logistics; processing infrastructure; capital requirements; and ultimately the business model and economics needed to make the system viable. We are essentially asking what a globally scalable seaweed industry would have to look like if it were designed today rather than extrapolated from current small-scale farming practices.

If an MBA team working alongside our biological and engineering expertise would like to complete an independent study, the learnings would encompass a host of subjects around supply chains, economics, financing, industrial organization, and alliance formation.
