The university policy requires all students to be covered by a major medical health insurance plan while attending UC Berkeley. Students are automatically enrolled in the UC Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and will be charged a SHIP fee as part of their billable cost. To assist MFE students, the Haas Financial Aid Office and the MFE Program have negotiated a pro-rated SHIP charge.
Though some students may be able to waive SHIP, experience shows us that most students in the MFE program do not have the strict equivalent coverage required by the university, especially international students. For a few, SHIP can be successfully waived by submitting the health insurance online waiver form with proof of a comparable health insurance policy. The waiver must be completed each academic year at University Health Services. In order to waive SHIP, you must be enrolled in a private medical health insurance plan that meets ALL of the waiver requirements detailed on the University Health Services (UHS) website.
New Students: After submitting your SIR and Deposit, contact the program office and email [email protected] for a manual waiver process. Please indicate that you are a newly admitted Master of Financial Engineering student beginning Spring Semester.
Continuing Students: Complete the online waiver form by July 15th for the second half of your program.
UHS provides a waiver worksheet to help you prepare in advance of using the online waiver tool. You will receive a confirmation number upon completion of the form. Please print the confirmation page for your records.
Student Health Insurance Plan does not include Spouse or Dependents; this coverage must be purchased separately.
For more information, please review the University Health Services (UHS) webpage on Dependent Care Options, or email your questions to ([email protected]).
