Research Data
The Business Databases A–Z guide, maintained by the Thomas J. Long Business Library, helps researchers identify which licensed business, financial, and market data sources best match their specific research questions.
Haas researchers have access to a wide range of professionally curated research datasets for academic use, including:
- Audit Analytics
- Banking Suite
- Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP)
- Compustat
- Dewey
- LSEG
- Moody’s (Orbis)
- New York Stock Exchange Trade & Quote (TAQ)
- Nielsen
- Optionmetrics
- Ratewatch Scholar
- Standard & Poor’s Capital IQ Pro
Access to many of these datasets is provided through the Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) portal. For an overview of all the datasets the Library currently licenses via WRDS, please see the WRDS data research guide.
Additional licensed datasets and data‑centric databases are available through the UC Berkeley Library’s Dataverse, which serves as a central hub for datasets acquired and licensed by the Library for UC Berkeley and LBNL researchers, with particular strength in business, management, and social science data.
Researchers are welcome to email the Business/Economics librarians at [email protected] with questions or schedule Zoom or in‑person research consultations for individual support.
Working with Sensitive & Restricted Data
Working with sensitive or protected data (P3 or P4) requires extra steps. You’ll need to use approved campus systems and follow UC Berkeley’s data security rules.
Start by opening a ticket with Haas Research Computing
These projects usually involve several campus offices: Research Data Management, IRB/CPHS, Intellectual Property & Industry Research Alliances (IPIRA), Information Security, and Research IT. You may already be working with one or more of these offices, or you may not have started yet — either way, open a ticket with Haas Research Computing and we’ll help you sort out what’s needed and connect the pieces.

-
- A short description of your project
- The type(s) of data you’ll be working with
- The approximate number of records or data subjects involved
- Whether you think the data is Protection Level P3 or Protection Level P4 (if you’re not sure, that’s okay — we’ll help you figure it out)
From there, we’ll help you:
-
- Confirm your data’s protection level and loop in the right campus partners (RDM, IRB/CPHS, IPIRA, Information Security)
- Choose the right compute environment for your project, such as:
- AEoD Virtual Machines — good fit for P3 data, once set up with the right security settings
- Savio HPC (P3 environment) — requires its own separate, secured project space
- Secure Research Data & Compute (SRDC) — the only campus platform approved for P4 data
